West Islip High School senior Camryn Byrnes has received the school’s first Haas Basic Mill Operator Certification.

To complete the certification, Byrnes had to complete an online training course, score perfectly on competencies from machine and lab safety, tool setup, material identification, fixture setup, controller interface settings, machine controller operation, precision measurement and machining workflow. She also completed a hands-on practical examination to demonstrate each of those skills to produce a machined part and verify that critical dimensions were within expected tolerances.

Upon completion of the exam, not only was Byrnes certified as a Haas Basic Mill Operator, but West Islip High School is the first school on Long Island (second in New York State) to provide this certification examination to its students.

Byrnes will be attending Lehigh University to study an integrated degree in engineering and arts and sciences this fall. She was the FIRST Robotics team captain this year and is looking to continue working with Haas CNC machines while studying at college.
