Celebrating Tradition at Paul J. Bellew’s Flag Day Ceremony

The West Islip Union Free School District and local community came together on June 12 for Paul J. Bellew Elementary School’s annual Flag Day ceremony, celebrating the significance of the American flag and the values of freedom, service and patriotism.
Gathered in front of the school, students, staff, district administrators, board of education members, members of the West Islip American Legion, and West Islip Fire Department volunteers joined together for this meaningful tradition.
Paul J. Bellew Principal Rhonda Pratt welcomed guests to the ceremony, which featured patriotic musical performances representing every grade level. Students showcased their talents through performances by the chorus, band, orchestra and recorder groups, along with a special presentation by the kindergarten classes.
Surrounded by a sea of red, white and blue, students honored the American flag as a symbol of freedom and unity. Throughout the ceremony, students from each grade level shared reflections on what the flag, freedom and patriotism mean to them.
As part of the ceremony, members of the Paul J. Bellew Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts assisted the West Islip American Legion with a flag-folding demonstration, highlighting the respect and honor given to this important national symbol.
The annual Flag Day celebration provided students with an opportunity to learn about the meaning behind the flag while expressing gratitude for the freedoms and responsibilities it represents.
