Girls Lacrosse Hosts Steven Battista Memorial Game

The West Islip girl's lacrosse program hosted a Mental Health Awareness game during Mental Health Awareness Month in honor of Steven Battista. The event served as a meaningful tribute to Steven’s life while supporting the Steven Battista Memorial Scholarship for Hope and Healing, established by the Battista family. The scholarship will be awarded to graduating seniors and aims to continue spreading awareness, compassion and support surrounding mental health.
Throughout the evening, the West Islip girls lacrosse booster club organized a bake sale, raffle and additional fundraising activities, with all proceeds benefiting the scholarship fund. The event brought together players, coaches, families and community members in a shared commitment to advocacy and mental health awareness. Prior to the game, the Battista family participated in a heartfelt pregame ceremony alongside both teams. In a powerful display of unity and support, players lined up together at midfield as West Islip athletes presented carnations to their opponents, symbolizing compassion, solidarity, and the reminder that no one has to face life’s challenges alone.
The ceremony and game emphasized the importance of breaking the silence surrounding mental health and encouraging open conversations within the school community and beyond.
