Walking Together: ‘Mile for a Smile’ Promotes Inclusion for All

On April 17, Paul J. Bellew Elementary School held its annual “Mile for a Smile Walk” at the high school track in recognition of Disabilities Awareness Month. The entire school community came together in the spirit of inclusion and support as students and staff partnered up to complete the walk and celebrate the diversity of how all students learn.
To enhance accessibility and ensure an all-inclusive experience for every participant, sensory stations were also set up outdoors. Students rotated through a variety of engaging activities, including kinetic sand, Play-Doh, bubbles and other hands-on sensory experiences designed to promote engagement for all learners.
As part of the celebration, students and staff were encouraged to wear blue, reinforcing the message of acceptance, understanding and kindness. The event highlighted the importance of recognizing and celebrating all disabilities while fostering a supportive school community where every student feels valued.
