Galactic Learning Adventure During STEM Night

West Islip Union Free School District’s science department hosted an out-of-this-world STEM evening in celebration of May the Fourth, transforming the school cafeteria and planetarium into a galaxy themed learning experience for students and families.
Led by dedicated members of the Science Honor Society, who volunteered their time to facilitate activities, the event featured a variety of hands-on stations designed to spark curiosity and creativity. Elementary students explored STEM concepts through engaging, space-themed projects, including creating galaxy slime, constructing light sabers and Grogu-inspired characters, designing binary code bracelets and launching straw rocket ships.
The evening also included a special experience in the school’s planetarium, where students and their families enjoyed a screening of “Star Wars” under a simulated night sky, adding to the immersive and memorable atmosphere. The STEM Night provided an exciting opportunity for students to explore science, technology, engineering and math in a fun and interactive way while fostering a love of learning beyond the classroom.
