Manetuck Students Explore Space During PARP

As part of the school’s Parents as Reading Partners celebration, Manetuck Elementary School transformed a classroom into an immersive mini planetarium, creating a unique and engaging environment for students to explore reading and science together.
The experience was made possible through the efforts of administrators and members of the West Islip High School Honor Society, who helped design and facilitate a variety of interactive, self-guided stations for students.
Throughout the event, classes rotated through hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity. At the “What’s Your Astronaut Name?” station, students used a decoder to discover their astronaut identity based on their name and birth month. At the Constellation Maps station, students recreated constellations using star stickers and markers, learning how stars form patterns in the night sky.
At the Constellation Telescope station, students used flashlights to shine light through telescopes, marking the patterns they observed and gaining an understanding of how constellations can be difficult to see due to factors such as light pollution and dim stars. At the Rocket Station, they designed and launched their own rockets using simple materials, adding an element of excitement and exploration to the experience.
In addition to the activities, students were encouraged to bring books and flashlights for cozy reading time, further reinforcing the connection between literacy and imagination. The mini planetarium provided a memorable and meaningful way to celebrate reading while integrating science and hands-on learning.
