West Islip Hosts Night of Astronomy for Local Scouts

On March 2, West Islip Union Free School District welcomed a Girl Scout Cadette troop and the Tiger Scouts of West Islip for an evening of astronomy and hands-on STEM exploration. Scouts rotated between a planetarium program and activity stations led by West Islip High School Science National Honor Society students. Tiger Scouts worked toward their “Sky is the Limit” belt loop, learning to identify constellations, planets, satellites and stars, and exploring how telescopes work. Cadette Scouts worked toward their Space Science Researcher Badge, observing the night sky and learning about light pollution, astrophotography and women in space science. It was a great evening of curiosity, discovery and inspiration for the young scientists.
