West Islip High School Musician Wins First Place

West Islip High School senior Gavin Pollock recently earned first place at the 72nd annual Music Lovers Club Scholarship Competition held at the United Methodist Church in Islip.
Gavin was one of only five soloists selected to perform in the competition’s finals concert. During the performance, he showcased his musical versatility by performing a movement from the Mozart Oboe Concerto as well as a vocal solo by Mendelssohn. Following the concert, the judges awarded Gavin first place and a $1,500 scholarship.
In addition to his impressive performance, Gavin made history at the competition as the first student ever to perform both an instrumental and vocal solo during the finals. A two-year NYSSMA All-State musician, Gavin plans to pursue a career in music education and performance after graduating.
