After earning first place at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, West Islip High School senior research student Emma Fallon recently competed in the category of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Texas.
ISEF is the world’s largest high school science fair. This year 1,638 finalists from 64 different countries presented 1,324 projects in various categories of science and engineering. Fallon shared her research on an international stage, judged by doctoral level scientists.
The 12th grader studied microplastics that she collected and isolated from Long Island waterways and analyzed their chemical structure using infrared spectroscopy at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Fallon won the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Science Communication Award, which included a cash prize.
