West Islip High School science teacher Thomas Vitti made a special trip to Bayview Elementary School for an interactive science lesson with the fifth grade students on Jan. 21. As part of the in-house field trip, students gathered in the cafeteria to learn about the earth’s rotation, solar and lunar eclipses and the seasonal equinoxes.
Mr. Vitti – who works in the high school’s planetarium – set up different zodiac constellations around the cafeteria. Students learned about the summer solstice and the role of the sun and the moon in the changing seasons. The fifth graders rotated through the different seasons and learned about their zodiac signs.
