While the Olympic games kicked off in Paris on July 26, West Islip Union Free School District’s Summer Investigations students were ready for their big games as well. To close out the program’s four weeks, elementary students were going for the gold with an Olympic-themed week of activities.

The students went head-to-head in different types of outdoor games including potato sack, hula hoop and relay races. They participated in a water balloon shot put toss and measured their distances. In the library, students worked on Makerspace activities that included recreating Olympic events or making a new Olympic sport out of blocks, Legos and other building materials.

During their time in the STEM lab, the students made their own bouncy balls out of borax and tested their skills by bouncing them into plastic cups. Students also used building blocks to try to recreate the Eiffel Tower.
