The CSE is comprised of school staff, administration, school physician and parents of handicapped children. The CSE, by law, makes the recommendations to the Board of Education on the placement of children in need of special education and/or related services. All students are reviewed at least annually.

All information is kept confidential and accessible only with parental permission.
Special education needs are met through a variety of educational programs and support services within the district, and, when necessary, in out-of-district placements.

The district offers a developmental program of instruction, including support services, resource rooms and special classes designed to meet the child’s educational needs. At times, the severity of a student’s needs requires placement in programs outside of the school district.

If you feel your child may require special education services, discuss this with the school principal and staff, or refer your child by writing to the Special Education Office at the District Office. The Committee of Preschool Special Education (CPSE) determines the educational needs of children 3-5 years of age who may have a handicapping condition.

Committee on Preschool Education

The Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) is designed to serve youngsters between 3-5 years of age. The committee is comprised of a special education administrator, a parent of a handicapped child, the evaluator of the child, and a Suffolk County representative.

The function of the committee is to determine if handicapping conditions exist, and to make recommendations to the West Islip Board of Education regarding special education placement and/or related services. All information is kept confidential and is accessible only with parental permission.
