West Islip Union Free School District joined forces with Hauppauge School District for a cornhole tournament to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Teachers, staff and administrators from the two districts went head-to-head for the competition at Pro Game Athletics in Bay Shore. Twenty-five teams from each district competed, with the winning team receiving the honor of presenting the check to the Wounded Warrior Project. The tournament raised a total of $6,350 to benefit the organization. Congratulations to West Islip seniors Rocco Carpinello and Chris Piropato on their recent National Football Foundation recognitions. Rocco received the James C. Metzger National Football Foundation Suffolk Chapter Golden 11 Scholar-Athlete recognition, which is awarded to the top 11 scholar-athlete football players in Suffolk County. Chris was recognized as an Orlin & Cohen Orthopedics Player of the Week (week 2), where he totaled 11 tackles, including four for a loss and added a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the team’s win against Bellport.

Udall Road Middle School recently held its first schoolwide spelling bee. Two students - Amina Bajwa (winner) and Tyler Burnett (runner-up) - will be representing their school at the Bay Shore Middle School Spelling Bee. They will complete with other students from Suffolk County for a $1,000 scholarship. The Bay Shore Middle School Spelling Bee will be held on May 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Bay Shore Middle School.
